Ray Balkwill was born in Exeter in 1948. He studied at the Exeter College of Art at the end of which he made a career in advertising as an Art Director, working in agencies in London, Bristol, Bath and Exmouth. In 1990 demand for his work led him to give up his full time job, to paint professionally. He has exhibited widely and held many one man shows. He has also shown in group and open exhibitions including that of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour and the Royal West of England Academy, Bristol. He regularly contributes articles on painting for "The Artist" magazine and has also produced articles for "International Artist" and "Pastel Artist International". He has a wealth of teaching experience, running his own painting courses for over ten years, as well as demonstrating to art groups far and wide. Living in Exmouth, it is little wonder that the sea and its wealth of maritime subjects are his main source of inspiration. He paints in all media, but mainly in watercolour, pastel and oils, but is more recently exploring new directions for his work. Ray has had several books published by Halsgrove press in recent years
