Born 9th July 1938 at Whiddon Down, on the edge of Dartmoor, Devon, and sadly died very recently. When Lionel was two, his parents moved to Exeter, where he was educated at Exeter School. Part time study at Kingston upon Thames School of Art and Architecture, during which time he was awarded two R.I.B.A. travelling scholarships to Europe, one to Venice and the Northern Italian towns, and the other to the Rome School. Elected a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects in 1967. He was the recipient of six awards for architecture. Changed his career as an architect in 1991 in order to paint full time. He exhibited for over 35 years. He was a Council Member of the South West Academy of Fine and Applied Arts, and an artist member of the Arts Club in London.

Work hanging in public and private collections in Britain, Europe and the USA. Most recently, six paintings for the Master Penthouse Suite of the P & O Flagship liner “Aurora”. Twelve works for the Chief Executive’s Suite at the European Headquarters of the MBNA Bank of America at Chester. The Arts Club, London. Twelve works for MBNA/HQ in Madrid, Spain.
These include “The Presentation of the New Colour by H.R.H. The Duke of Kent to the 4th Battalion of the Devonshire and Dorset Regiment 1992.
Lionel is the author of seven commissioned books, for which he was responsible for the complete text and all illustrations.
